Burger bun made from sliced bread cut in circles

This is what my parents and I had for our lunch in a pub in Clun, Shropshire, today. But we didn't take it lying down. After a quick confab, we challenged the barman on whether they had run out of burger buns.

He lost his composure for only a second before replying: 'We make them ourselves. Like this. It means we never run out. See?'

What is that dollop of glossy but semi-translucent red on the foreground of the bun? It can't be catsup (ketchup to Yanks) because the color and transparency is off. And jam -- surely you don't put jam on your burgers? Perhaps it is a small exotic slug?

The bun, yes, was pitiful, Vanilla Ice trying to pass as a rapper. But the burger herself appeared robust. Thanks for the photos.

Hmmm, I fear the red dollop may actually be Clun's idea of catsup/ketchup/tomato sauce. Perhaps the sliced bread cut in circles (outrageous!) was a clever strategy to distract Helen and her parents from the pseudo-catsup - the burger itself also looks to be of poor quality, but that may be just the photograph...

That is what i would call ketchup (who says catsup??). It does look a bit sluglike and i did wonder if it would read as ketchup or not. The burger seemed to be the expensive kind of pre-made/frozen burger. It was quite nice but certainly not home-made. The 'meal' cost £4.95.
